Concerts with Wolfgang Zwiauer - The Underdeck

Fun Image to Accompany Wolf and I Paragraph Gwendolyn Masin

This and next week, a musician I have long admired and a friend I have long loved, has accepted my mad-cap idea to play music stretching from Biber to Bach, from Satie to Sibelius, with a lot of improvisation in between. Wolfgang is one of jazz’s most established personalities and plays a groove second to none. How I will handle his coolness, and he deal with the flourishes in Biber, is an experiment waiting to be experienced. Wolf has dubbed us “The Underdeck” because, he says, “Kate Winslet and her violin have come down to the underdeck of the ship to play with us music rascals!”

Catch us on 23, 24 and 28 September in Bern, Grossaffoltern and Biel.

Cocktail für die Musen – Concert Series in Casino Bern

MG 9908 Image to Accompany Yilian Paragraph Gwendolyn Masin

We are gearing up for a major concert highlight as part of my series in Casino Bern on 28 October 2021. With a programme centred around Bernstein’s West Side Story, joining me on stage are my guests Daniel Schnyder and the Melisma Saxophone Quartet. In anticipation, we released a throwback to the last concert we could give in the Casino back in February 2020. It featured Swiss Music Award 2021-winner Yilian Canizares and pianist Caspar Vos, in a performance incorporating jazz-influenced classical music and Latin music. You can see a snippet of our rehearsal in Casino Bern’s Burgerratsaal as we played de Falla’s “NANA”.

Furthering Education for String Teachers

Are you a string teacher? Then come along to the 49th International European String Teachers Association Conference this Saturday, 25 September. I will be giving a masterclass to two advanced violinists (Mendelssohn and Sibelius Violin Concerti) and sharing thoughts on how online learning has impacted teaching in the 21st century.

For those that are yet to register, click here to book your place. The cost for the three-day event (and access to resources afterwards) is only 10 EUR for students and 40 EUR for ESTA, ASTA and AUSTA members.

Listening Tip

I have been writing for years. (Haven’t we all?) And when it gets particularly crunchy, I have the privilege of working with Ariana Lombardi, editor, writer and one half of a set of twins who are both feisty, opinionated and up to speed. Ariana’s sister, Liv, who visited me in Budapest many moons ago, has her own podcast. It’s brilliant and important.

Listen to it here, with new episodes every Wednesday.
