The Space Between the Notes - XI

Zum deutschen Text

Something's coming!
Could be . . .
Who knows? . . .

There's something due any day—
I will know right away.
I got a feeling there's a miracle due,
Gonna come true,
Coming to me!

Finally! The Melisma Saxophone Quartet and I will perform the music of Bernstein’s musical “West Side Story” in Berne’s Casino on 28 October 2021. This concert was originally planned to coincide with the release of our recording of West Side Story in 2020. You can listen to the album on iTunes, or Spotify and other major digital streaming services, as well as on CD here.

Bernstein in turn serves as an inspiration for Daniel Schnyder, who joins us for this cocktail of classical and jazz music. Saxophonist Daniel Schnyder is one of Switzerland’s most celebrated composers. He has lived in New York City for several decades. Combining the work of these two composers, I want to offer a focus on the emigré, the perpetual nomad, the person who wants to fit in and yet is destined to being an outsider.

Reserve your seat here or, if you’re a member of Gwendolyn’s Bridge Club, join us for a special introduction to the concert with cocktails and a guided tour of the newly-renovated Casino here. If you’re not a member of GBC yet and want to attend this special occasion, please write to me at mail@gwendolynmasin.com. I will be delighted to welcome you to a community of friends who support music and arts events.

Bernstein

Bernstein, pianist, conductor, and composer was a noted speaker, wit, and an undeniably charismatic figure. Broadway’s most popular musical, “West Side Story”, serves as a commentary on love and prejudice.

Peter Sheppard-Skaerved and I return to the exploration of Rodolphe Kreutzer’s Etudes in the second of three 12-week cycles. Having explored the first 12 Etudes (which can be downloaded in The Exhale’s Recordings Library), throughout spring of 2021, we continue from lucky number 13, every Tuesday evening between 18:30 and 19:00 CET / 17:30 and 18:00 BST at The Exhale.
