In this podcast, join The Strad Magazine's Davina Shum and I as we discover neglected works by Vítězslava Kaprálová, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Lazare Saminsky, Irène Régina Wieniawski and Lili Boulanger. The pieces share similarities: they are all an ideal fit for the encore repertoire, consist of sparkling melodies and form a symbiosis with the piano part.
The composers share some similarities too. Vítězslava Kaprálová and Lili Boulanger were students of Nadia Boulanger and were viewed as prodigies, hailed to be amongst the most promising composers of their generation. Both passed away at a remarkably young age. On the other hand, Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Saminsky were marginalised during their lifetime which explains to some degree why neither are well-known amongst classical string players. Despite the pressure they faced, they rose above to leave beautiful compositions to society.
