West Side Story Pre-Order

Something's coming!
Could be . . .
Who knows? . . .
There's something due any day—
I will know right away.
I got a feeling there's a miracle due,
Gonna come true,
Coming to me!

West Side Story.

Perhaps the most iconic musical of the 20th century, and a favourite of mine. I’m so grateful to have been invited to develop and perform this seminal work with the Melisma Saxophone Quartet. That we were able to record this music by Leonard Bernstein —powerful, moving, uplifting, so important at this difficult time for so many of us—fills my senses with the thrill of the new, the hopeful, the energy-driven. This recording was performed live at GAIA Music Festival Oberhofen.

... this is exciting, zingy stuff. Violinist Gwendolyn Masin impresses, never more so than in the intro to “America”, when she’s soaring over a carpet of burbling saxes. Huizinga’s leaner textures emphasise how jagged and dissonant parts of this score are. That this is a live recording adds to the performance’s edge and excitement.
